DESCRIPTION:

The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) indicates that 9% of the US population (15% of women) will have an eating disorder in their lifetime (https://anad.org/eating-disorder-statistic/). This presents an important opportunity for MFTs to include eating disorders in their practice without necessarily developing a dedicated specialty. This program will discuss some important, but basic elements to assessing and treating eating disorders for those clinicians who would like to do so.

Objective of Presentation:

  • Understand the current taxonomy of eating disorders used in the United States
  • Understand the basics of working with eating disorders in psychotherapy.
  • Identify some common medical risks associated with eating disorders
  • Identify common comorbidities between eating disorders and other mental health conditions
  • Consider important questions for determining appropriate level of care
