DESCRIPTION:

As first generation Latina therapists, who frequently work with Latino families, we are bringing awareness to the most commonly ignored perspective of the first generation’s experience. A workshop dedicated to highlighting the unique challenges and triumphs that come with being First Generation, often referred as “First Gen.” Learn about the impact and unique struggles of being the trailblazer of the immigrant family, the in-between identities and the straddling of two worlds. Join us as we unpack the multicultural and multigenerational layers present in first generation Latinos and their families.

Objective of Presentation:

  • ·       Obtain a deeper understanding of the First Generation experience
  • ·       Raise cultural awareness and competency for the immigrant household
  • ·       Identify the different factors that can impact First Generation experience
  • ·       Bring awareness to the multiple cultures that exist within one family system
  • ·       Acknowledge and highlight the multi-generational differences and outlooks

    About Our Presenter: 


    Jessica is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AAMFT Approved Supervisor. She is in private practice and is the face behind Your Therapy Houston. She is bilingual and practices in English and Spanish. She primarily works with first generation individuals and families, couples, and teenagers. As a First Generation Mexican-American she has a passion for bringing mental health awareness to the Latino community. She enjoys helping individuals and families with boundaries, building emotional intelligence, and breaking generational cycles.


    Martha Wade is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist Associate, supervised by Leonard Bohanon, PhD. At her private practice, Wade Family Therapy, she focuses on supporting couples and families build stronger and healthier relationships. She dedicates part of her work in offering therapy services to uninsured clients at Interfaith Community Clinic of the Woodlands. Along with clinical work, it has been a long time goal to work with the Latino community in supporting and guiding generational change. In 2023, she partnered with Jessica Medina to start Latina Therapist with the mission to broaden mental health awareness, information and accessibility to the Latino community.
